What is Kerala massage?

Kerala massage is the everyday name, in the Gulf, for the oil massage that comes from the state of Kerala on India's south-west coast. Its roots are in the traditional body-care practices of the region, where warm oil and long strokes were part of ordinary life long before spas existed. Two things set it apart from most massage menus: the amount of oil, and the rhythm.

The oil is warmed before it touches you and used generously, so the therapist's hands glide rather than drag. The strokes are long and continuous, running the full length of a limb or the back rather than working one small area at a time. The result feels slower and more enveloping than a Swedish massage, and less pointed than deep tissue work.

A note on the word "Ayurvedic". Many spas call any Kerala massage "Ayurvedic". Ayurveda is a full traditional medical system, with practitioner assessment and specific medicated oils. Our Kerala massage borrows from that heritage, but it is a relaxation massage, not an Ayurvedic treatment, and we don't describe it as one.

Kerala massage or "Malayali massage": is it the same thing?

Yes, as far as most people searching in the UAE mean it. "Malayali" simply means from Kerala, and people often search for Malayali massage or a Malayali massage centre when what they want is this style: warm oil, long strokes, a familiar way of doing things. On this page we describe the technique, because that's what you're booking. You'll find the same treatment under either name when you message us.

What does a Kerala massage actually feel like?

Here is how a session typically flows. Your therapist will adapt it to you, but the shape stays the same:

  1. Back and shoulders first. Warm oil is spread across the back in wide sweeps, then worked in with long strokes from the lower back up over the shoulder blades and out to the shoulders.
  2. Rhythm over force. Instead of pressing hard on one knot, the therapist repeats the same long stroke many times. Most guests find their breathing slows within the first few minutes.
  3. Legs and feet. Long strokes run from ankle to hip, with circular work around the knees and a thorough foot massage, which many guests say is their favourite part.
  4. Arms and hands. Strokes from the wrist to the shoulder, with gentle work through the palms and fingers.
  5. Optional head and scalp. If you'd like it, a little oil is worked into the scalp at the end. Say no if you're heading straight back to work.

You can ask for more or less pressure at any time. "A bit lighter" or "firmer on the shoulders" is all it takes.

Which oil do you use, and what if I have an allergy?

By default we use a warm, coconut-based massage oil, which is what most guests from Kerala expect. If you're allergic to coconut or nuts, or simply prefer something lighter, tell us when you book and your therapist will use a plain, unscented oil instead.

Kerala massage leaves more oil on the skin than other styles. If you're going back to the office, ask for a lighter finish and use the shower before you dress. A towel is always provided.

Kerala vs Indian vs Swedish massage: which one tonight?

Who books a Kerala massage at Chameli?

Our Kerala massage guests are a mix. Many are from Kerala and the wider south Indian community in Ajman, Sharjah and Dubai, who want the kind of oil massage they grew up with. Others are office workers and drivers who sit for long hours and want something slower than a deep tissue session. And some simply tried it once and haven't booked anything else since.

Because the spa is on Al Ittihad Street in Al Rashidiya 2, it's an easy stop from Ajman City Centre, Al Nuaimia and the Sharjah side. If you're coming from further, see coming from Sharjah or coming from Al Nahda, Dubai.

Traditionally used for vs what research generally supports

Kerala-style oil massage is traditionally valued for easing stiffness, helping sleep and leaving skin soft. It's worth being clear about which parts of that are tradition and which have research behind them.

According to the US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), studies suggest massage in general may help with some kinds of pain, such as low-back and neck pain, at least in the short term, and may help people feel less anxious. The evidence is still limited, and it doesn't single out any one style. There isn't good research on Kerala massage specifically.

So we describe it honestly: a relaxing, warm-oil massage that many people find helps them unwind and feel less stiff. It is not a cure or a treatment for any condition.

Is Kerala massage suitable for everyone?

Massage is not a medical treatment, and the team at Chameli Spa are massage therapists, not doctors. Please tell reception before you book, and your therapist before you start, if any of these apply:

  • a blood clot or deep vein thrombosis, now or in the past, or you take blood-thinning medicine
  • surgery, a fracture or a sprain in the last few weeks
  • a fever, an infection, or broken, sunburnt or irritated skin
  • a heart condition, uncontrolled blood pressure, diabetes with nerve changes, or a recent injury you haven't had checked
  • allergies to nuts, coconut, sesame or fragrance (we'll switch to a plain oil)

If in doubt, ask your doctor first. A good massage can wait a week; an aggravated injury takes longer.

Small things that make your first Kerala massage better

  • Eat lightly beforehand. A big meal and a long massage aren't good partners.
  • Arrive ten minutes early so you're not rushed into the room.
  • Tell your therapist about any sore spots before she starts, not halfway through.
  • If you want the head oil, plan to wash your hair after; it's very hard to hide.
  • Drink some water afterwards and give yourself a few quiet minutes before driving.

Questions before you book

How long is a Kerala massage at Chameli Spa?

The standard session is 60 minutes. Sessions run 60 minutes as standard; message us on WhatsApp for today's price. Longer sessions can be arranged when you book.

Is Kerala massage the same as Ayurvedic massage?

Not quite. Our Kerala massage draws on the same south Indian oil-massage heritage, but it is a relaxation massage, not an Ayurvedic medical treatment. We don't diagnose, prescribe or use medicated oils.

Will I be very oily afterwards?

Yes, more than after other massages. Ask for a lighter finish if you're going back to work, and use the shower before you dress. Towels are provided.

Can I ask for firmer pressure?

Of course. Kerala massage is medium by default, but tell your therapist and she'll adjust. If you mainly want firm, focused work, deep tissue massage may suit you better.

I'm allergic to coconut. Can I still book?

Yes. Mention it when you book and your therapist will use a plain, unscented oil instead.

Who is the Kerala massage for?

Adult men. Chameli Spa is a men-only spa; guests must be 18 or over.

How do I book a Kerala massage?

Call or WhatsApp +971 56 793 8432 with the time you'd like. We'll confirm a room and your therapist.
