What is aroma fusion massage?

It's a relaxation-style massage where the scent is part of the experience. Before you start, you're offered a few blends to smell; you pick the one you like. The blend is mixed into a neutral carrier oil and used throughout the massage. It's the "fusion" of a gentle massage and aromatherapy.

How do I choose a blend?

Go by what you enjoy. As a rough guide, citrus and mint-type scents feel fresh, while lavender and woody scents feel calming. If you don't like any of them, choose a relaxation massage with unscented oil instead.

Are essential oils safe on skin?

Used properly, mostly yes. Essential oils are concentrated and can irritate skin, so they are always diluted in a carrier oil, never used neat. Tell us if you have asthma, eczema, sensitive skin or fragrance allergies, and we'll use plain oil. NCCIH's aromatherapy overview is a good, plain-English summary of what is and isn't known.

Traditionally used for vs what research generally supports

Aromatherapy is traditionally used for mood and relaxation. According to NCCIH's aromatherapy overview, some studies suggest certain scents may help with anxiety or sleep, but the evidence is mixed and of limited quality. Enjoying a scent is reason enough.

Is aroma fusion massage suitable for everyone?

Massage is not a medical treatment, and the team at Chameli Spa are massage therapists, not doctors. Please tell reception before you book, and your therapist before you start, if any of these apply:

  • a blood clot or deep vein thrombosis, now or in the past, or you take blood-thinning medicine
  • surgery, a fracture or a sprain in the last few weeks
  • a fever, an infection, or broken, sunburnt or irritated skin
  • a heart condition, uncontrolled blood pressure, diabetes with nerve changes, or a recent injury you haven't had checked
  • allergies to nuts, coconut, sesame or fragrance (we'll switch to a plain oil)

If in doubt, ask your doctor first. A good massage can wait a week; an aggravated injury takes longer.

Questions before you book

Can I bring my own oil?

Please ask when you book. For hygiene and allergy reasons we usually use our own oils.

What if I don't like strong smells?

Choose the lightest blend, or a relaxation massage with unscented oil.
