What is Indian massage?
"Indian massage" covers the oil-massage habits found across north and central India, where a weekly oil massage was, and in many families still is, a normal part of looking after yourself. Compared with the slow, flowing Kerala massage, it's livelier: more kneading and squeezing of the muscles, quicker strokes, and attention to the head, neck and shoulders, which is where many of us hold tension from phones and laptops.
The finish is usually a short head massage drawn from the Indian head-massage tradition: fingertip work over the scalp, gentle pressure around the temples and a firm squeeze along the tops of the shoulders.
What makes Chameli an "Indian spa" in Ajman?
When people search for an Indian spa in Ajman, they usually want three things: the oil-massage styles they know from home, reception staff they can talk to easily, and a straightforward price. Chameli Spa is built around Kerala and Indian massage first, with the rest of the menu around them. You can message reception in plain English on WhatsApp, and every booking goes through one number: +971 56 793 8432.
What happens during an Indian massage?
- A quick check-in. Your therapist asks about pressure and any sore or off-limits areas.
- Back, worked thoroughly. Oil is warmed in the hands, then the back is kneaded and squeezed in sections, with brisk strokes in between to keep the blood moving.
- Legs and feet. Firm kneading through the calves and thighs, with brisk strokes up the leg and a focused foot massage.
- Arms and hands. Kneading through the forearms and upper arms, finishing with the palms.
- Head, neck and shoulders. You sit up or turn over for the finish: shoulder squeezes, neck strokes and fingertip work over the scalp. Say if you'd like it without oil in your hair.
Indian massage vs Kerala massage vs deep tissue
| Indian | Kerala | Deep tissue | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feel | Lively, thorough | Slow, enveloping | Slow, intense |
| Main technique | Kneading + brisk strokes | Long rhythmic strokes | Sustained pressure |
| Head massage | Usually yes | Optional | No |
| Afterwards | Awake, loosened | Sleepy, calm | Worked, maybe tender |
More detail in Kerala vs Indian massage: the real differences.
Who chooses Indian massage?
Guests who find gentle massages a bit too gentle, but don't want the intensity of deep tissue. It's popular after long shifts on your feet, before a night out, or at the end of a week of screens. Because it finishes with the head and shoulders, it's also a good pick if tension headaches from long hours at a desk are your usual complaint (though if headaches are frequent or severe, please see a doctor).
Traditionally used for vs what research generally supports
In Indian homes, regular oil massage is traditionally associated with strength, good sleep and healthy skin and hair. Research is more modest. The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) notes that massage may help some kinds of pain, including neck and low-back pain, in the short term, and may ease anxiety, but the evidence is limited and doesn't favour particular styles. We describe Indian massage as a thorough, energising massage, not a treatment.
Is Indian massage suitable for everyone?
Massage is not a medical treatment, and the team at Chameli Spa are massage therapists, not doctors. Please tell reception before you book, and your therapist before you start, if any of these apply:
- a blood clot or deep vein thrombosis, now or in the past, or you take blood-thinning medicine
- surgery, a fracture or a sprain in the last few weeks
- a fever, an infection, or broken, sunburnt or irritated skin
- a heart condition, uncontrolled blood pressure, diabetes with nerve changes, or a recent injury you haven't had checked
- allergies to nuts, coconut, sesame or fragrance (we'll switch to a plain oil)
If in doubt, ask your doctor first. A good massage can wait a week; an aggravated injury takes longer.
Getting the most from an Indian massage
- Ask for the head massage without oil if you have plans afterwards.
- If the kneading on your calves feels too strong, say so straight away; it's easy to ease off.
- Combine it with a Moroccan bath on a day off, bath first, massage second.
