What is deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue massage isn't simply "hard massage". It's slower than other styles: the therapist warms the area, then leans in gradually with thumbs, knuckles or forearm, holding pressure on tight areas and working along the muscle. Because it's focused, a 60-minute session often concentrates on two or three areas rather than the whole body.

Should deep tissue massage hurt?

It should feel intense in places, "a good ache", but not sharp or unbearable. Pain makes muscles tighten, which defeats the purpose. Use a simple scale with your therapist: if pressure goes above seven out of ten, say so. Some tenderness the next day is common and usually fades within a day or two.

What should I do after a deep tissue massage?

  • Drink water and take it easy for the rest of the day.
  • Skip heavy gym work for 24 hours on the areas that were worked.
  • A warm shower helps; so does gentle walking.
  • If pain is sharp or lasts more than a couple of days, see a doctor.

Traditionally used for vs what research generally supports

Deep tissue massage is popular with people who train hard or work physical jobs. The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) notes some evidence that massage may help low-back and neck pain short term, but the evidence is limited, and "deeper" hasn't been shown to be better. Firm isn't automatically more effective, so choose the pressure that feels right.

Who should avoid deep tissue massage?

Massage is not a medical treatment, and the team at Chameli Spa are massage therapists, not doctors. Please tell reception before you book, and your therapist before you start, if any of these apply:

  • a blood clot or deep vein thrombosis, now or in the past, or you take blood-thinning medicine
  • surgery, a fracture or a sprain in the last few weeks
  • a fever, an infection, or broken, sunburnt or irritated skin
  • a heart condition, uncontrolled blood pressure, diabetes with nerve changes, or a recent injury you haven't had checked
  • allergies to nuts, coconut, sesame or fragrance (we'll switch to a plain oil)

If in doubt, ask your doctor first. A good massage can wait a week; an aggravated injury takes longer.

Deep pressure is especially unsuitable if you bruise easily, take blood thinners, or have osteoporosis.

Questions before you book

Is deep tissue massage painful?

Intense, yes; painful, no. Tell your therapist if pressure goes beyond a comfortable ache.

Will I be sore afterwards?

Some next-day tenderness is common and usually passes in a day or two.

Can deep tissue fix my back pain?

We can't promise that. Some people feel less stiff afterwards, but persistent or severe back pain needs a doctor or physiotherapist.
