What do they have in common?
Both come from Indian home traditions where oil massage was routine rather than a luxury. Both use warm oil, work over the whole body and are usually given on a massage table with you in disposable shorts. Many guests try both before deciding which they prefer.

How do I choose?
- Evening, want to sleep well: Kerala.
- Before going out, or after a long shift on your feet: Indian.
- Tension headaches from screen time: Indian, for the head and shoulders (see a doctor if headaches are frequent).
- You dislike lots of oil: Indian, or ask for less oil in Kerala.
Is either one "Ayurvedic"?
Both draw on heritage connected to Ayurveda, India's traditional medical system, but a spa massage is not an Ayurvedic treatment. Real Ayurvedic care involves a practitioner's assessment and specific preparations. Research on massage generally, summarised by the NCCIH, suggests short-term benefits for some pain and anxiety, with limited evidence overall.
Questions before you book
Which is better, Kerala or Indian massage?
Neither; they suit different moods. Kerala calms, Indian energises.
Can I have a mix of both?
Ask your therapist for a Kerala massage with an Indian-style head and shoulder finish.
